Haami is a 2018 Bengali film directed by Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee. The movie is produced by Windows and is distributed regionally by the same. Upon release, Haami met with critical review and positive box office reception. Haami is an innocent tale of two friends, Bhutu and Chini, who comes from entirely different milieus. Before Haami, Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee came up with Ramdhanu which also dealt with a similar story regarding parents- children’s emotions. Haami is considered as a sequel to this where Laltu and Mitali’s characters are played by the same cast i.e Shibopraad Mukherjee and Gargi Roy Chowdhury. The Malayalam rights of this movie have been acquired by Rajesh Nair.

Plot

This film will take you back to the innocent world of 5-year-olds, who are ignorant of the intricate connotations of adult actions and gestures. Bhutu and Chini, two Class I students in a co-ed school are at the center of the plot. Their virtuousness and camaraderie fall prey to their parent’s judgment, creating a big scandal for the school. Coming from the different socio-economical backgrounds the friendship of Bhutu and Chini was an instant hit from the moment of inception. On Friendship day Chini ties a know on Bhutu’s wrist and in return Bhutu out of sheer innocence gives a peck on Chini’s cheeks. This blameless act is misapprehended by the adults and all hell breaks loose.

The film shows endearing teachers and a sensible principal trying to keep the peace as parents overreact to the tiniest of issues that are blown out of proportion. But the sweet friendship between Bhutu and Chini wins in the end, as the parents are taught to see their world through non-judgemental eyes.

The film addresses the relevant burning issues like safety in schools and tried to re-establish the trust between the schools and parent fraternity. The film proves it’s exceptionality by addressing this ultra-sensitive issue from a different perspective with a social message in it.
